ABOUT WESTBURY ROAD
The psyche on screen
Westbury Road is an indie film production startup based in Sheffield, United Kingdom. We specialise in documentary films with a poetic focus on the human psyche and philosophy. It was establised in 2023 by producer/director Peter Play to promote his own activity. However, the hope is that Westbury Road will grow to encompass other work. Sheffield is a vibrant city; it's real and honest and unlike asome other arts hotspots in the UK it is not cliquey. This allows space for different stories to be reflected in art. It is true for filmmaking in Sheffield as it is for other excellent art which has come out of the city.
The name Westbury Road is a nod to the street that Peter lived on as a child. His memories are of a free, creative, expressive place and time and perhaps some of that energy is reflected in our films.
Peter Play
Peter Play was born in London and his early artistic experiments were via the media of words and music. He enjoyed writing stories and poetry, and was also a rapper and reggae MC in his local community. Growing older, he developed interests in psychology, philosophy and technology. He initially chose to make a career in the latter, because he felt he could earn enough to fund his extra curricular artsy and humanistic exploits. He later studied psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate level while working in tech, and also played guitar in various bands as well as being a part-time DJ. Eventually he realised that there were stories that could best be told via media that encompassed light as well as sound; hence his interest in documentary filmmaking. As a psychologist with a keen interest in philosophy, he finds himself drawn to the film theories of Andre Bazin. He has lived in Sheffield since 2003.
